2011 Volkswagen Golf24
2:36 PM
GERMAN CARS, RACING CARS, VOLKSWAGEN, VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
Now that the 2011 installment of the legendary 24 Hours of Nurburgring is upon us, participating automakers are slowly coming out of the woodwork with the presentation of their endurance race cars.
For their part, Volkswagen has developed a high-powered race-spec version of one of its most popular models. Called the Golf24, Volkswagen’s entry to the 24 Hours of Nurburgring will be a four-wheel drive and will carry a 2.5-liter, five-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 440 horsepower and 398 lb/ft of torque mated to a sequential six-speed transmission with paddle shifters.
"With the new Golf24 we are continuing our successful commitment at the Nürburgring 24-hour race," said to Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.
"The event enjoys huge popularity, is one of the true classics in motorsport and, due to its extreme distance and unique race track, also represents a very big technical challenge."
There’s no doubt the Volkswagen Golf24 will have its hands full at the day-long endurance race this weekend, but if there’s a brand that can steal the show at Nurburgring, we wouldn’t bet against one of the biggest auto brands in the world. The fact that they have a car that poises a threat to its competitors makes them all that more dangerous come race time.
There’s another video of the Golf24 doing some test runs at the ’Ring after the jump.

2011 Volkswagen Golf GTI Reifnitz
3:00 PM
SPORT CARS, VOLKSWAGEN, VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
Volkswagen came at the GTI Treffen show in Worthersee with three impressive concept cars. But the most impressive Golf GTI in the show was one developed by Volkswagen Coaching in cooperation to APR. The model is called Golf GTI Reifnitz and develops an impressive 370 HP from the usual 2.0 TSI engine.
The model features a special paint design and an aero styling developed by the VW Coaching team. The interior is also extremely detailed, but the most impressive work was made under the hood. The team opted for an APR Stage III Turbocharger System, APR Intercooler and APR RSC Performance Exhaust. The result is an impressive 370 HP (an impressive update over the standard 215 HP) and a peak torque of 354 lbs-ft.
VW Coaching staff was available throughout the day to answer questions and when asked about power, a quick reach in the glove box brings a dynamometer certification chart of the power and torque delivered by APR’s Stage III Turbocharger System.

The VW Golf GTI cabriolet concept
1:40 PM
CABRIOLETS, VOLKSWAGEN, VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
| Volkswagen have finally revealed more details about their Golf GTI cabriolet concept car at its world debut at lake Worthersee in Austria. Unlike the Golf cabriolet though, the Golf GTI cabriolet is still just a concept car for the time being and figures may change should the car reach the production lines. The sport feel is emphasized by razor-sharp lines and styling, with the front and rear spoilers, as well as the side sills bearing motor-sport design elements. The front fog lights have been replaced by air vents that cool the high-performance brakes. The wheels are Glendale 19” alloy, with the brake calipers painted in “Tornado red”. The interior is decked out with Nappa leather seats and GTI logos on the headrests. The gear shift, parking brake, leather steering wheel and many other areas of the interior continue the “Flash red” styling all the way to the piping on the floor mats. The Volkswagen Golf GTI cabriolet concept is now slouch on performance, the engine produces 155 kW / 210 PS which is equal to the standard GTI. This enables it to complete 0-100km/h in just 7 seconds, with a maximum speed of 240km/h. Look for more information on the VW Golf GTI Cabriolet if it makes it into production. | |
The new Volkswagen Golf GTI 35 year edition
10:43 AM
GERMAN CARS, VOLKSWAGEN, VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
| It’s the 35th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and to celebrate, VW have created a special edition to honour this classic vehicle. Volkswagen practically invented the sports hatch in 1976 and have a long history of quality which the ‘Edition 35’ will surely continue. The Edition 35 comes with a number of features to separate it from the current Golf GTI. The front bumper has been upgraded and given a new design as well as the wheels which have received the special edition treatment. The performance in the Edition 35 has also been upgraded, gaining an extra 25 hp compared to the current Golf GTI, topping off at 235 hp. Perhaps the most significant and unique feature of the Edition 35 is the text “35” which will appear on the fender, on the door sills, the head restraints as well as the centre of the seats. There is no word yet on a South African release of this special edition but the Golf GTI Edition 35 goes on sale in Germany in mid June, with base price of 30 425 Euros. | |
